Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra in for review
Here it is: The Galaxy S20 Ultra, Samsung's largest flagship, has reached its headquarters! And it's not only bigger, thicker and heavier than the Galaxy Note10 +, but also enormous in terms of innovation.
Almost everywhere you look, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is a better smartphone than any of its Samsung counterparts. Hell, you could say it's a better phone than any other smartphone.
Before proceeding, here is a video unpacking and a brief description of the camera.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has a large dynamic AMOLED of 1440 x 3200 pixels (6.9 inches) that can be updated up to 120 times per second (in FullHD). This is a huge 5000 mAh battery (with the 45 W charger ok) Fill in just 58 minutes, a high-level chipset (either a Snapdragon 865 or an Exynos 990), more RAM than most laptops and a camera system that can do everything in the dark (more on that in a few paragraphs).
Let's talk about the specs before we see the examples. The Galaxy S20 Ultra is a pioneer of the company's Nonacell 108MP sensor, which combines 9 pixels in 1 to get 12MP end images. The 1 / 1.33-inch sensor is one of the largest on the Phone (bigger if we question an old Nokia PureView and the weird experimental camera-phone hybrid that no one has bought yet) that gives it certain advantages, Larger sensors capture more light and offer a shallower depth of field than smaller ones. In combination with the bright 1: 1.8 lens at the top, the main camera of the Galaxy S20 Ultra can achieve excellent results in both good light and poor lighting conditions.
The other impressive sensor is the 48-megapixel periscope telephoto lens. It is quite large at 1 / 2.0 inches and offers a 4x optical zoom or approximately 102mm in 35mm equivalent (the main camera measures 26mm). It is also stabilized, which means it can be used in low light without night mode. Other periscope cameras we saw (the P30 Pro comes to mind) were basically unusable when the light faded.
All of this relates very well to the following examples. We took some pictures with the Galaxy S20 Ultra's 108-megapixel main camera, the ultra-wide 12-megapixel unit, and the 48-megapixel periscope module in normal mode and then at night. 108MP and 48MP sound good, but ultimately all three cameras capture 12MP still images.
Be sure to check out the detailed analysis in our full review, which will be released next week.
With all the impressive specs, you can bet the Galaxy S20 Ultra is a great device. It's bigger than the Galaxy Note10 + in all areas except for the width, but it feels bigger due to its thickness and added weight. On a positive note, the considerable camera bump is a good placeholder to show your little finger.
Then there is the price. The best Samsung orders the best price from Samsung: USD 1,399 / EUR 1,349 / GBP 1,199 for the original 128 GB model and USD 1,599 / EUR 1,549 / GBP 1,399 for the 256 GB model, both 5G. It's hard to swallow, but pre-orders in some markets get a pair of Galaxy Buds + for free, which is good.
